And the award goes to…

Who doesn’t love an awards show?

Well, apparently, a lot of people. Awards, once the bedrock of monocultural moments, have been on the slide for a while

Last year's Oscars drew a television audience of 18 million people, down from a pre-pandemic high of 23.6 million. The Grammys saw a drop in viewership for the second consecutive year in 2025, while 7% fewer people watched the Golden Globes in 2026 than in 2025.

In this context, this week’s Logies had a hill to climb. They brought in Robert Irwin to add some star power, who proceeded to drape a python around the neck of an unsuspecting guest.

Nevertheless, the night appeared to be a hit, helped by a bittersweet posthumous win for Sam Neill and overdue recognition for Deborah Mailman, who became the first-ever Aboriginal Australian to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Unlike its American counterparts, the Logies also saw an uptick in viewing numbers, although was beaten out for the nightly top spot by the ratings juggernaut that is [checks notes] Seven News.

And why, you may ask, have we chosen to write about awards this week? Oh, you know, no reason.
