The wonder of weird

Every so often, you come across something that makes you think a little differently, or puts scaffolding around a vague feeling bouncing around your brain. Such was the case with this fascinating deep dive into how and why weirdness is disappearing.

We won’t spoil the ending (and it’s not as clear cut as it being a bad thing), but as you can probably tell, The Cave holds weirdness in high regard. In the face of its decline, it’s something worth putting effort into holding onto - and calling out.

Which brings us to the draw for the FIFA World Cup. Putting aside the embrace of despots and autocrats (kinda kills the buzz if you don’t), the entire event was an unintentional celebration of weirdness.

Donald Trump was awarded a peace prize, complete with a trophy, a certificate, and a medal, like a kid at his own birthday party. 

Ice Hockey legend, Wayne Gretzky, who was there for some reason, announced that North Macadamia could land in Group A, if anyone can find it on a map. 

And the Village People performed YMCA, because honestly, what else are they going to perform?

Ideally, weirdness would come without the undertone of fawning to some of the world’s worst people. But for now, we’ll take what we can get.
